Overheard recently
In a local children’s centre, a granny singing to her grandson: “Aunty Mary Had a canary Fly up the leg of her drawers. When she farted Out it darted From the leg of her drawers Kiss me Charlie Kiss me Charlie On the leg of me drawers Kiss me Charlie Kiss me Charlie Lost the leg of me drawers” Apparently it is an old music hall song, which she remembers her...

Bumblemama: Times I have felt judged →
bumblemama: By my mother, when giving the twins formula because I didn’t have enough breast milk. By other new parents when bottle feeding in public. By older people when breastfeeding in public. By career-minded friends when I said I was in no hurry to go back to work. By my husband when he sees me…

Work life balance
When I got paid in money for my professional efforts, one of the things I tried to achieve was a work-life balance. Some weeks that didn’t happen, but I rarely had a day without a few moments to myself. Even if just the tube ride to work, or the walk to the station. Now that my job is child rearing, for which I get paid in cuddles and smiles (dispensed unpredictably) there is no such...

Note to self. Must remember to wear a t shirt at Meath Gardens these days. It’s constantly tropical in here!

London zoo
Another day out suitable for an out of town visitor and young children: The gardens of the Zoological Society of London. Top exhibits for our toddlers were the petting area, called ‘Animal Adventures’ and the Monkey Walk where little monkeys leap freely around. Our boy particularly enjoyed the proximity in both cases, shrieking with delight as the little monkeys swung so close to him...

Old clothes
Today I am wearing leggings and a shirt that I bought (and wore a lot) about 20 years ago, when I was about 4stone (50+ lb) lighter than I am now. It isn’t the most flattering outfit now, but I really wish someone had told me to stop hiding my teenage body in such oversized clothes.

Coram's Fields | a haven for play →
Anyone who finds themselves in central London with children who need to let off steam should check out Coram’s Fields. A playground, picnic space, some animals and a cafe… (And very close to the amazing Ciao Bella for scrummy pizza & pasta for when you all need refuelling)

I have been rocking the buggy in the hall for thirty minutes. Usually it takes about five for the both to be asleep. My boy is snoring, my girl not. I’d pull her out but I know she wants sleep. And I need a shower! I’m getting crosser and crosser. Oh screw it. She can fall asleep on her own. I’m going to shower anyway…

Usually when the clocks go forward, I curse the hour less I get in bed. This morning, the little ones woke me too early and I felt better about it because the clock said 6:15 not 5:15. Spring forward indeed!

bumblemama: Me: I realised that I should treat myself with the same respect I treat my children. Friend: yes, had you not been? Me: well, not really. I spend time making fresh food for them and zap a microwave meal for me. I take them to lots of different kind of play sessions but don’t have any kind of…

The NCT Debate
“I remain angry at the unhappy, confused, disappointed tweets I have received, following my initial slightly petulant “Bollocks” tweet on the 3rd of January, and amazed at the discovery that the NCT website has 53 mentions of “Homebirth” and only 8 of “PND” (sadly, if you don’t know the abbreviation PND and just type Post Natal Depression into the NCT website you get no information).  I...

Finger Food Breakfast Ideas
My LO won’t eat cereal. We have tried enough times etc but he flat refuses. Every day it’s fruit puree, peanut butter or a little marmite and cream cheese on toast and at weekends we get fancy and have scrambled eggs or mini fluffy pancakes. I’ve adapted these recipes a little for babies. Tried tested and loved…..!  For the muffins, I reduced the sugar and upped the...

Love is Patient
“Welcome to the most wonderful, if exhausting, days of your life. Partake of the vicodin with a liberal hand. I wish you hours of endless joy, personal satisfaction beyond your wildest expectations and the calm patience of our better saints. May grace bless your house and always surround your son with the protective love of God’s better hand. Huge kisses and warm hugs. I am so very...

bumblemama: You’ve been many things to me, and to others: a source of comfort, pride, nourishment. I know some have envied you, how you look(ed), what you could do. I also know some have pitied you – and me – when you were at your most raw, bleeding, and not quite making enough. But, my dears, we’ve done a…

Lower back pain self referral
The Mile End Hospital physiotherapy department allows self referral for lower back pain. (I think you have to be registered with a Tower Hamlets GP, but I’m not sure). It is great if, like me, your baby/ies are getting heavier and still like being carried. And your back is threatening to quit. I’ve had a couple of appointments now, each a combination of assessment, treatment and giving...

Maslow and parenting
So way back in the dim distant days of academic learning, I remember hearing about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Basically the theory says that as humans, we are all primed to seek out basic needs (like food) before more sophisticated needs (like friendship or creativity). It has been on my mind again recently, as my twins near their first birthday. How much of the first year has been spent...
